"I don’t mean to say that I have already achieved these things or that I have already reached perfection. But I press on to possess that perfection for which Christ Jesus first possessed me. No, dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it, but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us." - Philippians 3:12-14 (NLT)
The author of this passage, Paul, has two goals for himself. The first goal is, “to press on to possess Christ Jesus”, which means that even when times are hard, Paul wants a relationship with Jesus. His second goal is, “to forget the past and look forward to the future that he has in Jesus.” Paul knows that focusing too much on the past will not help him to see God’s plan for his life, so he seeks to always be looking towards a future hope. Paul knows that setting these goals will lead him to the ultimate prize, which is God!
What goals can you set that will help you grow in your relationship with Jesus?
